Justin Hanrahan is an LA-based, ACS accredited, award winning Cinematographer who has worked in Film and TV across the world for over 20 yrs.
Justin began his shooting career in Australia before relocating to Hong Kong in the early 90’s. There, he covered major international news stories and shot long format documentaries for almost every major network across Asia and the Middle East.
Justin moved into high-end documentaries for clients including BBC’s Natural History Unit and National Geographic.
Justin’s love for storytelling led him to work in TV drama and narrative feature films. His experience, versatility and ability to capture beautiful, stark imagery, caught the attention of the late Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club), leading to Justin’s first union show ‘Big Little Lies’ for which he filmed 2nd Unit and Additional Photography.
Following the success of Big Little Lies, Jean-Marc hired Justin for all titles, 2nd Unit and additional photography for HBO’s ‘Sharpe Objects’.
Justin also completed 2nd unit work on Jason Bateman’s ‘The Outsider’.
Whilst shooting ‘The Outsider’ in Atlanta, Justin was offered the DP role for Season 2 of ‘The Rookie’ working with TV legends Rob Bowman and Bill Hughes. His role gave him the responsibility of making the show look more cinematic to secure a 3rd season.
Justin finished 2 successful seasons of ‘The Rookie’ for which he recently won a Gold Australian Cinematography Society Award for Best Cinematography in a TV Drama.
Throughout his career in the US, Justin has worked in the camera department on other various Hollywood productions including Happy Death Day, Sam Neil’s Why Anzac, Justin Timberland project in Italy, James McTeigues Breaking In and James Cameron’s 'Deepsea Challenger.'
Recently Justin finished a Film project with the wonderful and talented Marie-Julie Dallaire, a frequent collaborator of the late Jean-Marc Vallee.
Justin has obtained 20 other State and National Cinematography ACS awards for his work in nearly every category, including 2 National ACS Tripod awards. He recently shot a large part of an IMAX documentary called ‘The Last Glaciers', DP'd Bruna Papandreas (Made Up Stories) latest success on Paramount Plus called 'Undressed' and recently won Best Cinematography at The Austin Film Festival for his documentary 'Enough Lebanon'. Justin is currently attached to 2 feature films this year and starts prep end of May 2023.
